How does Diamond.com assure customers of their diamond's quality?
Diamond.com fully understands how important the purchase of an engagement ring is to you. So, in order to assure you that you're receiving the value and product you expect, we provide both a grading report from a well-known and well-respected independent gemological laboratory such as the GIA or AGS for all diamonds of 1/4 carat or more. We also provide a professional jewelry appraisal report at no charge for any diamond of $500 or more. (We'll gladly perform an appraisal on any item under $500 for a nominal charge.)
This appraisal is an estimate of the approximate retail replacement value of your diamond jewelry, which may be used for insurance coverage or other purposes. The appraisal report contains valuable information, including:
An accurate and complete description of each article of jewelry being appraised
The clarity, color and carat weight of the diamond
The diamond's shape (pear, round, princess, emerald, etc.)
Type of setting (platinum, gold, etc.)
Name of independent laboratory certification, if applicable
Approximate current retail replacement market value
All appraisal reports from Diamond.com are signed by our Appraiser/Graduate Gemologist, so you can be secure in the knowledge that the diamond you purchased is of the quality and value you expect.

How much should I budget for an engagement ring?
This is an important question that many first-time diamond buyers ask. You've no doubt heard of the two-months' salary guideline. This is a good starting point, but only you know your personal finances and how comfortable you feel with the dollar amount you choose to spend. Our advice is to visit our Learning Center, then do a search of our diamond selection using your newly acquired diamond knowledge and see for yourself 'how much diamond' you can get for your money.
You may be comfortable with the two-month guideline, or you may discover that finding the diamond that says how you truly feel may require dipping a little deeper into the piggy bank or saving a little bit longer (which will give you more time to plan the perfect proposal, by the way!). No matter how much you spend, though, you can always be assured that when you select a diamond from Diamond.com, you're getting the finest quality your money can buy.

How do I know what she'll like?
It may help to look at her other jewelry to get a reading on her taste and style (modern or classic, etc.), as well as what metal she prefers (yellow or white gold, or platinum). You can ask one of her close friends or relatives to give you some direction-as long as you're sure they won't slip up and spoil the surprise! She may even help you out by dropping subtle hints like, "Did you see Jane's ring? It was only 3 carats!" Of course, there's always the direct approach-ask her! It may not be the most romantic way, but it guarantees that she'll definitely get what she wants. If you still want the element of surprise, you can still hold back the 'when' and 'where', even though she knows the 'what'.

How do I know her ring size?
This one can be tricky. If you're not concerned about tipping her off to your intentions, you can just ask. Our other two suggestions are to ask her mother, or take a ring you know she wears on her third finger from her jewelry box, bring it to a jeweler and have him size it, then return it. It's sneaky, but it works.

What are the "4 Cs"? Is one "C" more important than another?
Put simply, there are four universally accepted characteristics that all diamonds are graded by. They are known as the 4Cs, and they are Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat weight. It is the combination of these four “C’s” that determines a diamond’s value. By changing any of the characteristics, you can dramatically affect the diamond’s value, all other factors being equal.

What is a diamond certification, and why is it important?
A diamond's certification, or grading report, is a complete evaluation of your diamond, and states information such as its:
Color grade
Clarity grade
Carat weight
Table and depth percentage
Symmetry and polish
It may also comment on the diamond's fluorescence, girdle and culet, since these factors affect its value. A grading report also includes a diagram that "maps" the diamond's inclusions. Since each diamond is unique, the diagram serves as a fingerprint to identify that particular diamond. A diamond can be compared to its certificate by examining it under a 10-power loupe. It is important to note that a diamond grading report from an independent laboratory is not an appraisal, which estimates the monetary value of a particular stone. It is simply an impartial, informed opinion made by an experienced gemologist.

What is fluorescence, and how does it affect my diamond?
A characteristic in some diamonds that can affect its value is known as fluorescence. When exposed to ultraviolet light, small percentages of diamonds fluoresce, or emit light. Fluorescence is graded on a scale of Inert, Faint, Slight, Medium, Strong or Extreme. A fluorescence grade of strong or very strong can make a diamond with a near-colorless grade look even whiter, but may also make the diamond appear slightly milky in some conditions.
